- Before we get into the practical communication techniques, I have to fix something that society has messed up. You see, there's a piece of common sense that isn't very sensible and I'm sure you've heard it before. It's important to make a good first impression. No, it's really not, at least not in any situation where your goal is to create a genuine connection. If you're just trying to make someone like you for a few minutes, such as when you're making a sale, then by all means, go for the good first impression and then follow the rules that you already know for that. Be polite and superficial. Don't take any risks and behave like everyone else. But if you're interested in creating real conversations and connections, then forget about making a good first impression and start practicing making a correct one.
