- Have you heard the saying, timing is everything? Fundraisers often consider the right timing for big projects, such as campaigns, events, and communications. Timing also matters for everyday responsibilities, such as donor prospecting. Since securing donor referrals is highly effective in identifying prospects, I'm going to walk you through five tips to help determine when the timing is right for this approach. First, for donors to make referrals, they must trust you and your organization. Donors will naturally assume that you will treat their friends and colleagues the same way you treat them. Address any challenges in your internal systems, and be sure that donors have had positive experiences before you ask for referrals.
