Structure and align design elements
- [Instructor] Finding a fast way to organize your layout can save you a lot of time and make your designs more visually appealing. I'm sure you've all been in a situation where you try to align an element by pressing your arrow keys multiple times or measuring distance by eye, but none of these seem to be efficient methods for structuring your design elements. In this lesson, you'll learn how to align and position elements relative to the page or other elements on the canvas. Plus, we're going to see the power of the Tidy Up feature when it comes to spacing elements evenly. Now, let's get started. First, we're going to try and place those two images inside their respective shapes. If you try to do it manually, it might take you a while to find the perfect alignment. Instead, to speed things up, you can hold the shift key and select both elements. From there, you can navigate to the Position menu and click on Middle, and then Center, and there you have it. Once you select more than one element, Canva positions those elements relative to each other, not relative to the canvas or page. Now, let's try this thing with a rectangle. You're going to select the images, click position, and then align them. It's as easy as that. Often when creating a design with multiple elements, we have to move things around. However, if you want to move the newly aligned composition, then only the image that is on top would move. That can be quite frustrating. To avoid that, you can simply left click and drag, then press Group. Now, when you try to move the elements, they move as one. And don't worry, you can always ungroup the elements by clicking on the Ungroup option in the menu. When it comes to more complex designs, things can get a bit tricky. For example, if you have a lot of elements on a page and you want your design to be symmetrical, then we can seek help from what is known as the Tidy Up feature. Firstly, hold the Shift key and select the flower graphics one by one. Navigate to the position menu, and as you can see, there's a new option called "Space Evenly." Press Tidy Up. You can see that all elements are evenly spaced on the black strip. Fantastic. However, how can we be sure that they're evenly spaced? Well, here's a little trick and shortcut that you can use in all Canva designs. Select one of the flower graphics and hold out. Then you can proceed to hovering over any object on the page, and Canva will tell you the exact distance from that object. With this little trick, you can make awesome designs that are perfectly aligned and symmetrical.
