Test structure

- [Instructor] Test structure. Let's now talk about the tests for each skill. First, there's the reading and listening test. This test takes about two and a half hours to complete. The listening part takes about 45 minutes, and the reading part takes about 75 minutes. The last half hour is for answering questions about yourself. Overall, there are 100 multiple choice questions for each skill, and all of these cover real world tasks. We'll talk more about how these tests are scored later on. For now, just note that scores range from 10 to 990 points. The listening section is divided into four parts. In part one, you'll listen to four statements that match to a picture in your test book. It's your job to match the picture to the statement that describes it best. In part two, you will hear a question or statement, and you need to select the response that makes the most sense. In part three, you will listen to conversations between two or more people, and will answer questions about what the speakers say. Part four is similar to part three, but this time it will be just one speaker giving a talk. There are three parts to the reading section. The first section consists of gap fill exercises in which you'll need to select the best word to complete the sentence. Part two also contains gap fill exercises, but this time you'll be filling in several words, phrases, or sentences to complete a longer text. For the final part of the reading section, you'll be asked to complete reading comprehension tasks. You will read a text, such as a short magazine article or text message conversation, and answer questions about it. The other TOEIC tests are significantly shorter. The speaking test takes about 20 minutes, and the writing test is about one hour long. Both of these tests are computer based, and the maximum score for each test is 200 points. The speaking test has five sections. First, you'll be given a text, and asked to read it aloud. In the second section, you'll be given a picture, and asked to describe it. In part three, you will briefly respond to questions. Part four is similar, but you'll be given some information that you need to use in your answers such as a schedule or timetable. In the final section of the speaking test, you will speak about your opinion on a given topic for 60 seconds. The writing test contains three parts. In part one, you will write a sentence based on a picture you were given. The second part requires you to respond to a written request such as an email, and finally, in the third section, you will write an opinion essay, typically of at least 300 words.
