What is enterprise analysis?
- Enterprise Analysis gives us the tools, mindset, and strategies for doing business analysis at the strategic level of an enterprise. And though it may seem contradictory, we can actually apply this level of thinking anywhere in the organization. From a single line of business or product to the whole organization and beyond. What's key here is the ability to zoom in and out. To see how the work we're doing fits into the bigger picture, and how the big picture drives the work we're doing. I like to think of Enterprise analysts as a kin to eagles with the ability to soar high among the clouds, seeing the entire landscape, but then also having the ability to dive down once they've found something worth pursuing, but instead of hunting food, we're hunting for opportunity. Enterprise Analysis focuses on understanding the current state and defining the future along with any transition states to address a business need. This ranges from strategic thinking to the discovery of possible tactical solutions that will enable the organization to create greater value. In Enterprise Analysis, we provide the context for change. It is an ongoing activity that assesses any changes to business needs and any changes in organizational context as new information becomes available, which happens a lot. When engaged in Enterprise Analysis, we consider the current context in which we're working, as well as the expected outcomes of any actions. What we want to avoid is addressing a need or a problem in one business area by transferring that pain somewhere else in our organization. We want to ensure that we are looking at things holistically and developing solutions, mitigating risks, testing assumptions, and managing change that has the maximum return on value for our organization.
