- If you knew you had to run a marathon tomorrow, you would probably try to eat well, get enough sleep, and warm up your body today, right? Well, paying attention to things all day every day is a lot like running an emotional marathon every day. And your brain requires the right fuel, maintenance, and recovery to show up for you. So let's talk about why diet, exercise, and sleep are so important for your focus. First, diet. Did you know that your brain makes up about 2% of your body weight, but consumes about 20% of your body's total energy? Food is fuel, food is medicine, and what you eat will directly impact your cognitive performance. Here's what you can do. Try to incorporate more omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and nuts and antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries to help protect brain cells from inflammation that can disrupt focus. Next, sleep.
