Serve others

- Essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Serve and thou shall be served." In other words, if you're sincere in your desire to help and give your time and energy to others, you will almost always benefit from those actions. As you know, serving others is one of my top values, so this topic is special to me. When I and Ralph say, "You'll benefit from serving others," we aren't suggesting that you should be motivated for offering to help. Instead, we're saying it's an automatic benefit of your genuine drive to support others. Now, it's one thing to want to serve, but quite another to know where to start. This idea is so important that schools have been implementing service learning programs since the 1980s. Through these institutions, service has been distilled into four different types.
