- So we're going to do a test. It's a classic multitasking test to illustrate what happens to our attention when we try and multitask, a digital habit most of us do daily. There'll be two parallel activities going on with an additional common distraction. You might think you can multitask, but let's see. Ready? Good luck. The first time the word multitasking appeared in print was in 1965 in a manual for a mainframe computer. Human brains are amazing, but unlike computers, we have just one single processor. So how did this feel? Does it remind you of a soothing spa break? I think not. Interestingly, that cognitive load is similar to being on a video call whilst checking your email, which is something many of us do. So what is multitasking? Well, we can all multitask physically.
