From the course: Building an Ecommerce Website with WordPress

Installing an SSL certificate

- [Instructor] The SSL encryption helps keep all transactions on your website private and secure. You can tell a site has an SSL certificate installed when its URL uses HTTPS rather than HTTP, and when there's a small padlock beside the URL in the browser. Installing an SSL certificate is non-negotiable. Not only is it just the right thing to do to go the extra step to protect customer's information, but most payment processors simply will not function with your site without one. Modern hosting accounts will offer an SSL certificate for each site you own for free. It's possible you may need to purchase one, but if you choose a good host, it'll be included. One thing to look out for, however, is a problem called mixed content. A mixed content warning looks like this, and will appear if there's any content on your site that for whatever reason, is not using the encryption. You can contact your site's hosting support or install a plugin like Really Simple SSL in order to resolve this issue.
