- Sometime ago I was coaching an executive who came to me after having a difficult experience during a team meeting. While this team was on a break, several of them were at the coffee station talking about the conversation they had just had in the meeting. Not realizing my client was within earshot, they spoke candidly about what they disagreed with and about things they wish he'd done differently. He said to me, "It wasn't that I minded what they said, but more that they hadn't said it directly to me in the meeting, but, instead, behind my back." None of us would enjoy the experience of knowing others had feedback or pushback for us that they chose to share elsewhere. But sometimes, often without realizing it, we signal to others that we're not comfortable having them challenge our ideas or give us feedback about ways we could improve.
