- A while back, after leaving the conference room where my client and his team had met, I noticed one of his team members seemed preoccupied. When I approached her and asked if everything was okay, she confided that she hadn't agreed with the decision the team had just made. When I asked her why she hadn't raised her concerns, her response was telling. She said, "I didn't want to come across as negative "or like I was complaining." As it turns out, her concerns were valid, and had she expressed them, could have saved the team weeks of work. Most of us have moments where we struggle to express dissenting ideas or viewpoints we fear others might find difficult to hear. Being able to confidently share our perspectives with others requires two muscles; the courage to speak our minds and the competence to speak them effectively.
