- Let me tell you a story about Paul. Paul lives in the suburbs and walks to work every day, two hours each way. Every day, he gets to the office sweaty. One day, his colleague Jonathan asks him, "Why don't you just drive? "That would take you only 15 minutes, "and you wouldn't have to wake up so early." Paul says, he doesn't have a driver's license. Jonathan answers, "Well, why don't you get one?" Paul gets a little irritated and says, "Well, I don't have time. "I barely have enough time to get work done, "spend barely enough time with my wife and kid, "and of course, my commute eats up four hours of my every day." That might seem like an absurd scenario, but that's exactly the trap millions of people find themselves in. The latest surveys show that the number one reason people don't get the extra skills they need at work, is because they don't have time, which is ironic because those skills would've helped them do their work a lot faster, and save time. Back in 2021, my research team and I conducted the largest study ever done on time management. We wanted to see essentially what time management does to us, how it affects us. Naturally, we found that time management improves productivity, and performance quite a bit. That was to be expected, but we found something else that was very surprising. The impact of time management was even stronger on things like well-being and having a sense of purpose in life. It may sound surprising, but it actually makes a lot of sense, because when you manage your time effectively, you're actively creating space in your life for things that you truly value. That's why this skill is so fundamentally important. It empowers you to prioritize your goals and experiences rather than constantly reacting to life's demands.
