- There's lots of reasons why people don't focus on customer retention. I'm going to break down a couple for you now. The first one is people spend too much time chasing new business. In order to grow a business, you need more than new customers. You should implement a customer retention strategy that is a year long, and it starts by just staying in touch with your customers. The second thing that people don't do is they don't have enough discounts and special offers. People who are loyal to you want to get something for their loyalty, so you do need to have something special that's just for them. The third mistake that people make is they don't segment. Lack of segmentation is dangerous, especially if you're using email to communicate with your customers because everything is not for everyone.
