- I have three final ideas to help you in your mentoring journey. First, in addition to cultivating a network of mentors for yourself, start being a mentor for other people now. You are never too young or old to do this. For example, my middle schooler son mentors a fifth grader, who, in turn, mentors a kindergartner. The best way we learn something is to teach others. So if you serve as a mentor, I promise you will learn a lot about how to be a successful mentee. Second, be sure to express your gratitude to your mentors often. Make your expression of gratitude personal and authentic. For example, recently, I had a protege give me a book about Finland, as she knew I was heading there on a grant. I think most people also really appreciate a public acknowledgement of their effort, such as an endorsement on LinkedIn. Finally, develop a team of mentors, not just for your professional life but for your personal life too.…
