- How many times have you received feedback on work that you've done and got lots of positive comments, but it's the one negative one that you remember the most, and it plays on auto repeat in your head? There's actually a term for what happens when the brain puts negative thoughts on a replay loop. Have you heard of something called rumination? Rumination is a practice that we have in common with animals like cows, camels, and others. When these animals eat they initially chew their food and swallow it, but then the bring it back up, and chew on it several more times. Thankfully, we humans don't do that physically with the food that we eat, but we do ruminate mentally with our thoughts. We take a negative memory or something that we're anxious about, and then we'll think about it over, and over, and over again. Unfortunately, avoiding rumination is easier said than done.
