Imagine, a company has a side-to-side VPN connection between its head office in Manila and its corporate cloud VPC. One day, users report that the cloud web application is unreachable. When the network team checks the firewall, the VPN tunnel still appears up, and no changes were made. After checking the logs, they discover that the internet key exchange session has ended. Without IKE, the VPN cannot maintain secure encryption keys, so traffic stops working even though the tunnel still looks active. This is why understanding IKE is critical for VPN reliability.
