Understanding virtual interfaces (VIFs) in AWS Direct Connect

Hello, everyone. In this lesson, we're going to talk about Virtual Interfaces or VIFs and AWS Direct Connect. These are one of the most important pieces of the Direct Connect architecture. And once you understand them, everything else becomes much clearer. Before we begin, remember that AWS Direct Connect, or DX, is a dedicated network link between your data center and AWS. VIFs are what actually make that connection usable. So what is a VIF? A virtual interface is a logical connection that sits on top of your physical Direct Connect link. Think of the physical DX connection as the cable, and the VIF as the lane of traffic you configure on that cable. We need VIFs because they determine where your traffic is going. They let you reach AWS services, connect to your VPCs privately, and separate different kinds of traffic. One physical VX line can have multiple VIFs.
