RTO vs. RPO

RTO vs. RPO

- There are two types of objectives in disaster recovery, RTO, or Recovery Time Objective, and RPO, or Recovery Point Objective. Basically, RTO refers to the time, and RPO is all about the data point. RTO is the time it takes after a disruption to restore a business process to its service level, as defined by the Operational Level Agreement, or OLA. For example, if a disaster occurs at 12 noon, and the RTO is three hours, the disaster recovery process should restore the service to the acceptable service level on or before 3:00 PM. If your application's not restored after three hours, then it means you have breached the designated RTO. RPO on the other hand, is acceptable amount of data loss measured in time. For example, if a disaster occurs at 12 noon and the RPO is one hour, the system should recover all data that was in the system before 11:00 AM.
