Understand parcels

- [Instructor] In some projects, especially residential subdivision projects, we need to create and manage property boundaries. This is handled in Civil 3D through objects called parcels and parcel segments. Now, parcels are unique in Civil 3D in the way that they're created and in the way that they behave. For example, on my screen, I've got four kind of random line segments that happen to intersect to create a closed shape. If I take these four segments and turn them into parcel segments, something kind of magical happens. The closed shape that they form creates a parcel, and if I click on the label, you'll see the outline of the parcel here. This is a new Civil 3D object. It's a parcel object and the four sides that make it up are called parcel segments. Civil 3D recognizes the closed shape and creates the parcel object complete with a label. Now, if I edit one of these segments and kind of disrupt that closed shape, you'll see that the parcel disappears, and if I put it back, it reappears. With this approach, we can form closed shapes from existing boundaries, right of way lines, and other geometry that we create ourselves to quickly and efficiently design a parcel layout for our project. In this chapter, you'll learn the tools and techniques to create parcels efficiently and accurately. We'll get started in the next video by creating parcels from existing objects.
