Understand alignments

- [Instructor] Before we jump in and begin working with alignments, let's talk a little bit about what they are, what they do, and where they're used. Alignments are the backbone of all your linear designs in Civil 3D. Roads, pipelines, railways, walls. I even once used an alignment to design a ski slope for a popular resort in Pennsylvania. As you'll learn, we look at these linear designs, kind of one dimension at a time. Plan view, profile view, and then section view. Alignments represent the plan or 2D view of your linear design. If we look at our drawing here, we see a corridor object representing the design of Jordan Court and if I click the center line, you'll see the alignment right at the heart of it all. The alignment also provides the stationing that's needed to express where you are along this linear feature, whether you're out in the field or paging through a stack of plan and profile sheets in the office. Throughout this chapter, you'll learn how to create, edit, and analyze alignments, so go on to the next video to get started.
