Designing assessment tools with generative AI
- [Instructor] Assessments provide critical insights into a learner's progress, reinforce learning, and can foster a deeper level of engagement. Evaluating the effectiveness of training programs is also crucial, as it ensures that programs drive meaningful results. While GenAI offers powerful capabilities for developing assessments and program evaluation, many L&D leaders are unaware of its potential to streamline these processes. Let's dive in. Continuing with the example of the day one module, Foundations of Futures Thinking and Leadership, first, I'll show you how to create a couple of prompts to generate assessments for the day one module. Next, I'll show you how to leverage GenAI to evaluate the results and effectiveness of the entire five day Futures Thinking Leadership Development Program using the Kirkpatrick Model. Let's start with a quiz. To test knowledge and concept mastery, you can write a prompt like, please create a comprehensive quiz to assess the knowledge of leaders who have completed the day 1 module entitled, Foundations of Futures Thinking and Leadership. Ensure that the quiz covers all learning outcomes, including a balanced mix of five multiple choice questions, three true false questions, four short answer questions to test core knowledge and to prompt deeper reflection. And three scenario-based questions to evaluate conceptual understanding and practical application. Provide the correct answers and a brief explanation for each question, focusing on why the answer is correct to reinforce learning. This prompt can generate a comprehensive balanced quiz for assessing leaders' understanding of Futures Thinking and Adaptability. The various question types can effectively test both theoretical knowledge and practical application. You can even use GenAI to grade the quiz. Now, perhaps you'd like to create a competency-based assessment. You can create a prompt like, please create a competency-based assessment to evaluate the knowledge and skills of leaders who have completed the day one module titled, Foundations of Futures Thinking and Leadership. The assessment should measure the following competencies. Strategic foresight, adaptability, critical thinking, and decision making, and uncertainty. Include three to four scenario-based questions that reflect real-world leadership challenges, such as navigating technological disruption or responding to market volatility. Also include two to three reflection questions, asking leaders to evaluate how they've applied Futures Thinking and Adaptability in their leadership roles. Provide a detailed scoring rubric that breaks down performance into mastery, proficiency, and developing levels for each competency, with clear criteria for how each competency is demonstrated. Additionally, include an answer key and explanations for each scenario. The goal is to assess theoretical knowledge and the practical application of Futures Thinking in real-world leadership contexts. As you can see, GenAI is an excellent tool for developing competency-based assessments that are relevant, realistic, and customized. You should explore how GenAI can help you develop other forms of assessments, such as case studies, role plays, gamified simulations, projects, and participant interviews, and as a bonus, you can even use GenAI to create leadership action plans aligned with learning objectives for each module to guide leaders to drive action around desired behaviors. The Kirkpatrick model is one of the most effective methods for evaluating learning results and effectiveness once training is completed. In aligning with the five day Futures Thinking Leadership Program scenario, I generated a cheat sheet to walk you through leveraging GenAI at each level of the Kirkpatrick model. It includes step-by-step instructions for each stage, and shows you how to turn training data into actionable insights, making training evaluation more streamlined, data-driven, impactful, and aligned with business goals and strategic priorities. Before moving on, take a moment to review the cheat sheet I've provided in the exercise files for this course. Next, you'll see that I've compiled a curated list of GenAI tools that span content creation, presentations, imagery, video, audio, and e-learning platforms. Exploring these cutting-edge resources can empower you to elevate your L&D initiatives, drive deeper engagement, and stay ahead of the future of learning.
