Disaggregation and virtualization in 5G RAN
Let's explore the 5G new radio in little bit more detail, especially how the baseband processing has evolved and how it is being virtualized and cloudified in modern networks. From the traditional perspective, on the left side, we have a 4G network where we have a baseband, which is monolithic component handling all the protocol layers, from physical layer to higher layer signaling in a single tightly integrated hardware unit. In contrast, on the right side, 5G introduces a split architecture dividing the baseband function into two distinct components. One is the distributed unit, which is responsible for real-time latency sensitive processing. The second is the central unit, which is responsible for non-real-time and higher layer functions. Now, this separation is critical to enable network flexibility and scalability.
