Tailoring your resume
Now that we've explored career paths and found real opportunities, it's time to take the next big step, optimizing your job application process. Right. This is where things get real, because finding a job is one thing, but standing out as a candidate is another. Exactly. In this chapter, we'll show you how to use generative AI to make that process easier and more effective. We'll cover three key areas, skill building, application tailoring, and getting interview ready. We'll use my resume and the construction project manager job we found earlier as our example. So you'll see exactly how this works in real life. So once you know the role that you're aiming for and the skills that employers want, the next step is making sure that your resume reflects that. Copilot can help by turning a job description into a plan of of action for your resume. Summarize this job posting and extract keywords and responsibilities and qualifications that they're looking for. Copilot quickly highlights what matters most. Keywords like project planning and scheduling, budget and timeline management, and quality and safety oversight. This provides language employers commonly use, helping you tailor your resume and increase your visibility. So now that we've seen the job description, the next step is figuring out how your current skills stack up against what's needed and how to close any gaps. Right, if you're thinking about how to make a career move, understanding your transferable skills is key. Let's compare my old role to this job description. Perfect, Copilot can do it for us. Compare my previous role as an administrative assistant to construction project manager. What skills overlap and what's missing? Running that now. Okay, Copilot says I've got strong organization, communication, and problem-solving skills that overlap. Missing pieces, things like technical knowledge, budget, and cost control, and risk management. It even suggests how we can close these gaps. Now that Copilot has helped us pull out the key responsibilities and qualifications from that job posting, we can use those insights to update Bear's resume for this specific role. Copilot makes this easy by reframing past experience to highlight the most relevant skills. Okay, so first I'm gonna enter this prompt. Help me reframe my experience as an administrative assistant, customer service representative, and server to highlight the skills and achievements most relevant to the construction project manager role from B&B Solutions. Following the prompt, Bear is going to insert the job description from B&B Solutions after by pasting it and a current copy of his resume after that. Copilot will then take my previous roles, emphasize transferable skills like organization, communication, and scheduling, while aligning them with the keywords from the job description. I've reviewed the resume that Copilot helped me create and made sure everything was accurate. And then I took some of the suggestions and integrated it into a new document. This is the final version of my resume that Copilot helped me create, and the changes are huge. My professional summary now connects my transferable skills like scheduling, budgeting, and stakeholder communication directly to the construction project manager role. There's also a new core competency section that highlights the skills B&B Solutions is looking for. and my bullet points now emphasize leadership, compliance, and measurable impact. In addition, taking this course and becoming AI fluent means you can add Copilot to your skills section on your resume and even highlight these skills on LinkedIn.
