- In the realm of responsible AI, The story of the US Air Force cockpit crisis in the late 40s serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of relying on averages, which can mask built-in biases. What happens is that people thought it was pilots making errors in these airplanes. It turns out that it's because they based a whole cockpit design on one kind of person, not a tall person or a person with big feet or long legs. And so what happened is there was groundbreaking research on thousands of pilots to debunk the concept of an average pilot. It showed that there's no average across all key dimensions of the body, and it made the Air Force design planes that fit individuals maybe even like you. This lesson of diversity in design is an example of having a compass that makes you consider, does this fit just you? If so, it probably doesn't fit someone else.
