The future of work

- With agentic AI, we are witnessing an unprecedented shift that is fundamentally different from previous technological revolutions. Unlike past technical waves that unfolded over generations, agentic AI is accelerating at breathtaking speed. What we are experiencing is not just another tool, it's a fundamental re-imagining of human machine collaboration. As one project manager confessed after implementing an advanced AI agent, "This isn't a tool. This thing thinks and acts like me." This transformation create what I call the adaptation paradox. Just as we need new skills to work with AI, the time available to develop these skills dramatically shrinks. Skills that once lasted for years now become obsolete in months. In the short term, we need to develop four key skill transitions to thrive alongside AI agents. First, we must shift from task to workflow thinking. While earlier AI operated task by task, agentic system work at the workflow level. This requires understanding how individual task connect across a broader process and focusing on the outcomes. Second, we need to move from control to delegation. This means developing oversight capabilities without micromanaging, balancing autonomy, and creating governance frameworks that ensure AI operates ethically. Third, we must transition from simple interactions to true collaboration. understanding AI's expanded capabilities, providing high level guidance rather than step-by-step instructions, and forming strategic partnerships that leverage both human and machine trends. Finally, we need to evolve from augmentation to value creation. As agents take over entire workflows, we must focus on areas where humans remain irreplaceable. Genuine creativity, ethics, critical thinking, and relationship building. Looking to the longer term, success requires a fundamentally different approach. While short term skills help us adapt to current agentic AI capabilities, this technology will continue to sophisticate to the point where most specific skills we know today will become obsolete and new ones will become obsolete even faster. This acceleration demands mastering three essential competencies that transcend specific skills. The first one is being change-ready, which means developing resilience and adaptability in the face of continuous transformation. Not just learning new skills, but developing the capacity to constantly evolve. The second is being AI-ready, which involves understanding how to work effectively with AI systems, developing an intuitive sense of their capabilities and limitations that adapts as AI itself evolves. The third is being human-ready, which focuses on strengthening uniquely human capabilities that we call the humics, including genuine creativity, critical thinking, and social authenticity. This fundamental human abilities are timeless and serve us fertile soil from which new, relevant skills naturally emerge as technology evolves, making them more durable than any specific skillset. Our education systems must also transform to incorporate this fundamental abilities as the main part of their curriculums. Several countries like Finland and Singapore have already started such adaptation. Remember, the future of work is not about humans versus AI. It's about creating a symphony where both play to their strengths. By focusing on developing our uniquely human abilities, we don't just survive this transformation, we thrive in it, ensuring we remain irreplaceable in the age of agentic AI.
