- [Instructor] Welcome to After Effects Weekly. This time, I want to show you how to create a three by three snappable ruler using the proportional grid in After Effects. This will allow you to use the rule of thirds. So the subject of the image is placed at the intersection of those dividing lines. The idea here is that off-center composition is more pleasing to the eye and looks more natural than one where the subject is placed right in the middle of the frame like this hummingbird over here. It will also encourages you to make creative use of negative space, which is the empty areas around your subject. Okay, so let's see how to create it in After Effects. First, I go to the grids and guides option here, I'll click and hold, and I'll switch on the proportional grid.
