From the course: Advertising on Facebook

How Facebook ads work

- [Instructor] Facebook ads work by leveraging Meta's extensive amount of user data to target specific groups of people with paid advertisements, and Meta generated an advertising revenue of over $130 billion in 2023. That was an increase of over 16% compared to 2022. In this course, we will begin to think of Meta as an advertising company and not just a social network. Now, before we get too far along, let's quickly discuss the difference between Meta and Facebook. The parent company known as Facebook, Inc. Rebranded as Meta Platforms, Inc on October 28th, 2021. This was to reflect its focus on building out the Metaverse. The social network itself is still referred to as Facebook, but anything that refers to the parent company and its suite of tools are considered Meta. You'll begin to see Meta ads being discussed. The difference between Facebook ads and Meta ads is small. Meta ads can be used across all of Meta's platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the audience network, while Facebook ads are limited to just Facebook. We will primarily be focusing on Facebook ads in this course, and I'm going to use the term Facebook ads most of the time for simplicity, there will be times where I discuss Meta ads at large, and I'll ensure I am clear when I'm talking about Facebook versus Meta. Now we are clear on the names, there's something I want you to do before we dive in, especially if you've never run a single Facebook ad before. Open up your personal Facebook account and scroll your newsfeed. I want you to be on the lookout for ads. How do you know if they're ads? They'll have the word Sponsored under the page name, just like you see on the screen here. You can click on the three dots menu to the right to confirm, and also to change your ads preferences. Try selecting the X and you can hide the ad outright, in this case, another advertiser paid Meta to show people like you that ad. In this course, I want you to make that shift from a consumer to an advertiser. Pay attention to every single ad that you see, and ask yourself questions like, what works, what doesn't? What can I learn from this ad for my own ad campaigns? Go and visit a couple of your competitors' websites. You'll likely start to see their ads in your feed almost immediately. Your competition is going to help you craft some great ad campaigns. Don't worry, we will go over exactly how to create those ad campaigns and target the right audience. But for now, your homework is to embrace your inner advertiser and begin to see your newsfeed from this new perspective.
