Creating a free form exploration in GA4
- Free form is one of the exploration types available in GA4, and it's one of the most flexible. I often use free form explorations to confirm that data I'm capturing in GA4 is showing up as it should, or if there are some metrics, such as exits that are only available in explorations, and a free form exploration is a useful way to report on that data. To create a new free form exploration, we're here in the Exploration section of GA4, and then we'll click on Free form. This way, we'll get some default dimensions and metrics to start with. The default visualization as you see here, is Table, and in a table, we're able to include multiple dimensions and metrics. For example, in our rows, we can click select dimension, and then we can add in, say, Country as a row as well. Then down here, I have this nested rows option. If I turn that to Yes, you can see this makes our display a little bit easier to read. So then we have a category and then Country, and as well, you could flip this…
