Fixing decorative bullets and numbers
- [Instructor] It's really common for designers and content creators to create unique bullets or numbers in a design to achieve a specific look. The challenge, however, is that it causes content to be tagged incorrectly. And as we learned earlier in this course, that violates WCAG Success Criterion 1.3.1, Info and Relationships. When bullets or numbers are created manually, the source application doesn't know how to properly tag them and often results in an inappropriate tagging structure. I have a document open here, and you can see on the left side here the designer has created these unique numbered items that they wanted to apply to the text to the right to indicate more of a numbered list. Now, what I wanted to show you is I have the same document open here in InDesign, and you can see over here on the right is the text, and then they created these manual circles for each one of the numbers.
