- The thing about addiction is that the impact is really far reaching, not only from a short-term but also a long-term perspective. And it's really important that we manage or address this if we want to nip it in the bud early. So, depending on the substance or addictive behavior the fix can vary, but several factors are actually common to all addictions. Now when you think about it, the brain regions and processes that underlie addiction overlap extensively with those involved in learning, memory, attention, reasoning and impulse control. And in the short-term it can range from disturbances in sleep patterns and these very same functions like learning, remembering, attending, or reasoning, and even connection with others or how we control our emotions and impulses and also how we make decisions.
