- So when people talk about addictions in the workplace I think the very first reaction I often get from people is, addictions in the workplace? There's no one in my workplace that's addicted. Because I think a lot of people think that addictions always show on the outside, when in fact, addictions can be a very private issue and you actually have to pay attention to begin to suspect when someone's addicted. In fact, of the 14.8 million Americans who are addicted to drugs, 70% are employed. When addictions do impact workplace performance we see things like absence from work, lost productivity, difficulty in controlling one's emotions, and sometimes you even see injury. And employees who abuse drugs or alcohol are often more like to be late, use sick days, or call in with unplanned last-minute absences.
