Voice over New Radio (VoNR) overview
We are about to explore the final destination, the ultimate goal where a voice call lives entirely in 5G world, from start to finish. There wouldn't be any fallbacks, there wouldn't be any detours. Just pure high definition conversation on 5G. First, let's define Voice over NR. This is the native voice solution for 5G standalone network. In this setup, everything about the call from the moment it starts, while it is connected, and even when it ends, happens entirely within the 5G ecosystem. This requires your phone, the 5G radio, as well as the 5G core, along with the IMS network, supports the 5G voice call end-to-end. The most immediate advantage of Voice over NR is a dramatic jump in voice quality. Unlike earlier solutions that had to adapt older technologies, Voice over NR was designed from the ground up to support advanced codecs like Enhanced Voice Services Codec.
