Service models explained: IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS
What if I told you that getting a pizza could explain one of the most important concepts in cloud computing? Whether you make it at home, get it delivered or eat it at a restaurant, you are experiencing different service models. Let's use this analogy to make sense of cloud computing. The three main cloud service models models align perfectly with 3 different ways you can get a pizza. Each model offers a different level of control and management. First up is the infrastructure as a service. This is like making pizza completely from scratch. You provide everything, the oven, the ingredients, the preparation and the cooking. The cloud provider simply gives you the basic kitchen space and utilities. You have complete control over every detail but you also have to do all the work. Examples include renting virtual servers, storage disks and networking equipment from providers. You manage the operating systems, applications and data while they maintain the physical hardware.
