Have you ever been on an important call, only to have it suddenly drop? This is frustrating. Let's kick off our deep dive into one of the most important aspects of network quality which is retainability. Retainability is the network's ability to maintain an active service session until it is legitimately released by the user or network. Think of it as the measure of the connection stability. Its sole purpose is to minimize involuntary service drops, ensuring your industrial IoT connections, cloud gaming sessions or video calls that remains uninterrupted. We measure this stability through specific data channels. The fundamental concept is the data radio bearer. It is the dedicated pipeline that carries user data. This is often called as EUTRAN radio access bearer or ERAP which we will explore in great detail in this course. And the stability of these bearers is what we are measuring.
