- If you had an extra opportunity to explain why you're a great fit for a role within a company, would you take it? Well, a non-generic cover letter is your ticket, and it's certainly a great way to stand out from a crowd of applicants. So if you're into it, there are a couple things you need to know to make a high-impact cover letter. First, we look at the job listing or application determine if a cover letter is even needed for the job that you're interested in. Some tech companies don't require one, and for many it's optional. If an application only wants a resume, don't attach a cover letter. If you're applying for any academic data science position at a university or national lab, it's a good idea to make one.
