Engineering Manager, Java Backend | Remote | $155K - $190K | FedRAMP Experience REQUIRED

Do you want to be building distributed backend systems in a regulated, high-stakes environment where the engineering problems are genuinely hard, the compliance requirements are exacting, and the bar for what ships to production is set by engineers, not timelines?

This isn't a role for managers who want to run standups and stay out of the architecture. It's for technical leaders who still think in systems, hold their teams to a high standard, and know that great engineering culture doesn't happen by accident.

What you'll do

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Java engineers, owning hiring, coaching, performance, and career growth
  • Drive technical architecture and design decisions across services deployed in both a federal enclave and AWS cloud environments, with FedRAMP compliance embedded from the start
  • Set and raise the engineering standard across the team: code quality, system design, test coverage, security, and DevOps practice
  • Partner closely with Product, DevOps, QA, and Security to deliver high-quality, compliant releases on a predictable cadence
  • Oversee production troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and operational improvements across complex distributed systems
  • Lead Agile ceremonies and create the conditions for your team to do their best work
  • Evaluate new tools and approaches, and drive continuous improvement in how the team builds and ships

What they're looking for

  • 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience, with strong Spring/Spring Boot expertise in production environments
  • 2+ years leading an engineering team or providing significant technical leadership, not just seniority
  • Proven experience designing and operating distributed backend systems and microservices at scale
  • Real experience in FedRAMP-authorized or similarly restricted environments, with a working understanding of what that means for architecture, access control, and auditability
  • Practical AWS knowledge: EC2, ECS/EKS, RDS, S3, SQS/SNS, Lambda, and how to use them correctly
  • DevOps-oriented mindset: CI/CD, observability, Docker, Kubernetes, automation preferred
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead people and technology without choosing between them

Nice to have

  • Kafka or other event-driven messaging at scale
  • Experience with Redis, Oracle, or PostgreSQL in production
  • Microservices migration or platform modernization in regulated industries
  • Tooling: Jenkins, Grafana, ELK, GitHub Actions, or equivalents
