About the Company
Our client, a leading supplier of new and remanufactured retail petroleum parts in North America, specializing in aftermarket components for fuel dispensers, POS systems, and automatic tank gauges, is looking for a highly experienced Senior Electronics Engineer with deep expertise in circuit board reverse engineering, firmware re-development, and advanced component-level troubleshooting. The ideal candidate has a proven track record in analyzing and redesigning complex PCB systems, writing embedded firmware from scratch, and leading efforts to restore, upgrade, or enhance legacy electronic systems. This position plays a key role in product lifecycle engineering, repair strategy optimization, and technical mentoring of junior team members.
The company's engineering innovations — including advanced coatings, improved inspection technologies, and AI integration — have positioned it as a quality and reliability leader in a market plagued by OEM obsolescence and high failure rates.
About the Role
This position plays a key role in product lifecycle engineering, repair strategy optimization, and technical mentoring of junior team members.
Responsibilities
- Perform full reverse engineering of multi-layer PCB assemblies, including schematic reconstruction, signal tracing, and component identification.
- Analyze existing embedded firmware and develop new codebases to restore or improve device functionality.
- Create detailed documentation for reverse-engineered circuits, including netlists, BOMs, and re-drawn schematics.
- Lead root cause investigations and advanced troubleshooting efforts on failed or intermittent boards.
- Develop automated test setups for diagnostics, board validation, and long-term performance analysis.
- Redesign and modernize outdated electronic boards using contemporary components while maintaining backward compatibility.
- Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and production teams to drive seamless board-level integration and repairs.
- Guide junior engineers and technicians on repair techniques, firmware flashing, and troubleshooting practices.
- Optimize board repair processes, reducing cost, downtime, and improving first-pass yield rates.
- Work with vendors and suppliers to identify equivalent or improved component replacements.
- Provide engineering support for production, service, and field teams during critical failure or redesign projects.
- Contribute to technical training content and SOPs related to board repair, reprogramming, and requalification.
- Research and incorporate emerging technologies to enhance product innovation, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 4+ years of experience in circuit board reverse engineering, embedded firmware development, and board-level troubleshooting.
Required Skills
- Proficient in C, Python & Linux for embedded development on microcontrollers (ARM, 8051, PIC, etc.).
- Deep understanding of digital/analog circuit design, signal integrity, and power electronics.
- Strong experience with lab tools including oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and JTAG/debuggers.
- Familiarity with rework stations, soldering/desoldering fine-pitch components, and BGA reballing techniques.
- Working knowledge of communication protocols (UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, USB, etc.).
- Ability to generate documentation such as reverse-engineered schematics, netlists, and layout notes.
- Strong analytical skills with a structured approach to failure analysis and debugging.
- Excellent communication and mentoring skills, able to convey technical concepts clearly.
Preferred Skills
- Proficiency with LCD/LED display, touchscreen/digitizer technologies.
- Hands-on, solution-oriented engineer with passion for restoring and improving legacy electronics.
- Experience working in fast-paced environments involving repair centers, refurbishing operations, or high-reliability systems.
- Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies.
