Financial Controller

Title: Controller

Overview:

Our client is seeking a Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting function for a ~$50M nonprofit organization. This is a newly created role, upgrading from a Senior Manager level, with full ownership of the close, reporting, and accounting operations. The Controller will partner closely with senior leadership and play a key role in strengthening processes, controls, and scalability.

Key Responsibilities:

• Own the full month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
• Lead financial reporting, including preparation of financial statements and executive reporting packages
• Oversee all accounting functions: GL, AP, AR, payroll, and cash management
• Establish and maintain strong internal controls and GAAP compliance
• Partner with FP&A on budgeting, forecasting, and board reporting
• Lead audit process, including financial statement and single audit support
• Oversee tax compliance, including Form 990 and regulatory filings
• Drive process improvements and support future system enhancements
• Manage and develop the accounting team

Team Structure:

• Reports to: SVP Finance
• Direct reports: 3 (Accounting Manager, 2 AP Clerks)
• Indirect oversight across broader accounting operations

Qualifications (Must-Have):

• Strong GAAP accounting foundation
• Experience operating as a Controller or senior accounting leader
• Ability to lead accounting for a ~$50M organization
• Proven ownership of full close and financial reporting
• Experience managing teams and improving processes

Preferred:

• CPA
• Public accounting background
• Nonprofit experience (including fund accounting / ASC 958)

Systems:

• Sage (or similar ERP experience)
