It was a pleasure joining Francine Lacqua on Bloomberg The Pulse to discuss the economic implications of the U.S. government shutdown, particularly how the absence of labor market data complicates the Federal Reserve’s decision-making. The labor market is showing signs of demand-side weakness that go beyond what supply-side dynamics would suggest. But without key data, the picture remains murky, and the Fed is left navigating policy in the dark. With the jobs report unavailable and uncertainty elevated, the Fed faces an even tougher challenge. Given the current economic backdrop, which doesn’t point to urgency, it’s hard to justify a full-speed approach. A more prudent path would be to bring rates closer to neutral and pause to reassess, giving the Fed its best chance of success. The shutdown itself may not rattle markets, but the lack of data certainly could. Link to the interview in the comments.
