Troy Miles liked thisTroy Miles liked thisAfter nearly 18 years at Cox Automotive, I've been promoted to Distinguished Engineer. It's the first time this title has been awarded in the company's history. I've spent those years chasing whatever technology wave looked like it would actually matter. Some bets paid off: big data, cloud infrastructure. Some were interesting detours (blockchain, anyone?). The current one, AI and agentic systems, feels like the most consequential shift I've seen since we moved everything to the cloud. In this role, I'll be working across our product and technology organization focused on three things: helping teams build AI the right way, making sure our engineering fundamentals don't get lost in the hype, and doing the R&D that turns AI capabilities into actual product decisions. Big thanks to Roger Vidal for championing this role and for trusting me to fill it. And to every engineer who's sat through one of my talks or sessions ... you've made me sharper. More to come. There's a lot of work to do.

The publicists who came before us were meticulous about their recordkeeping, and because of that, we inherited an incredible archive. One day, I came across a photo of a former Illinois freshman who transferred after just one season. I had read that he still held fond memories of his time in Champaign, so I decided to take a chance. I made a couple of prints and sent them to the gentleman in the photo, asking if he might sign one for me. He did and was thrilled to receive prints because he did not have a photo from his time as member of the Illini. Rest in peace, No. 36, Rev. Jesse Jackson.
