“It was May 2008 after graduating from Cal Poly, and I was wide-eyed and nervous on my first day at my first job at DMDC. When I got into the office, I was informed someone named Todd Muchmore was assigned to be my mentor. I was the epitome of a “newb” at the time who knew the basics of Java and programming, but had never done it on an enterprise-scale. However, I had two things going for me at the time: 1) I knew I was a “newb” and really wanted to learn how to be an exceptional enterprise software developer 2) I had Todd, an exceptional enterprise software developer, as my mentor My obsession with unit testing, documenting, and clean/readable code began from looking at Todd’s code. Todd is precise with his coding, understanding nuanced intricacies of our data-driven environment and writing unit tests and documentation that I saw first-hand save time and headaches years down the road. Todd helped me progress by never giving me the answer; but rather he helped guide me to find the answer myself. After helping onboard and mentor people myself years after, I can appreciate how hard it is to train young developers while continuing to contribute on your own deliverables. I also appreciated that Todd wasn't “the typical programmer”. Sure, he brings a gallon of coffee to work each day, but he’s someone you can hold a conversation with that’s not just about software. His attention to detail, diligence and code-quality set him apart from most developers I've come across.”
