Therapists: Feeling overwhelmed in private practice? Well, Melissa Bernstein (yes, that Melissa — co-founder of Melissa & Doug and now founder of the wellness brand Lifelines) knows a thing or two about business, has a heart for us therapists, and sat down with with me on Love, Happiness, and Success For Therapists to share her best business advice with you. And... you are going to love it. Melissa's perspective on business is deeply spiritual, believe it or not, and all about reclaiming the joy, the passion, the excitement about doing what you do and delivering it to people who need it. I left this convo feeling so inspired and excited. I'm going to warn you right now, this one might make you cry. But she also gave us some very practical to-dos to make your private practice more successful and your life easier. Here were her top tips. 1. Build a Bench Hire support before you feel ready. Think less about the money and more about the investment. A great part-time bookkeeper, admin, or freelance marketer can save you time, money, and stress — and let you focus on your clients. 2. Know Your Sweet Spot Get honest about what you love (and what you don’t). Do more of what energizes you — and delegate the rest as soon as you can. 3. Use the Tools That Exist I know we all mad at AI right now. However, there are some really useful applications for private practice owners that are ethical and appropriate! Melissa is all-in on using AI to save time and streamline operations. It’s efficient, affordable, and surprisingly effective for small practices. Those are just a few of her tips, but there's so much more. This conversation was packed with practical insight and heart. In my new book The Optimization Lie, I argue that Applied Adhocracy—a world of radically individualized work styles enabled by generative AI—can make us more productive, more creative, and happier—something that, for the first time in history, now seems technologically feasible. As much as I believe this, when I wrote the book I had no concrete idea how it would play out in practice. Yes, there are emerging AI-enabled, individualized skill marketplaces inside organizations that could usher in an era of Liquid Workforces (as I reported in an article for brand eins magazine). But overall, Applied Adhocracy was more of a hunch. Now it’s beginning to take shape. On the excellent podcast Poets & Thinkers, Arvind Narayanan offers—if not the answer, then at least a big piece of the puzzle: Hyper-bespoke workflow software. Many coaches believe they need better scripts to close clients. What they really need are better questions. A well-placed question creates clarity, surfaces truth, and invites ownership. It shifts the conversation from persuasion to partnership. This is exactly how professional coaching is meant to work. When you ask questions that help a client name the cost of staying stuck or the benefit of change, decisions become easier. This aligns with ICF competencies around evoking awareness and facilitating client growth. Great questions do the heavy lifting because they help the client sell themselves on the work. One of my favorite prototyping activities is microvideos, a way of showcasing the "story we want to tell" about next year's priorities. This is a spin on the LUMA Institute video scenario method: https://lnkd.in/ecpeuweP 🤝 Step 1: Form Groups + Assign Roles Teams are pre-grouped by priority area, with each person taking on an actual production role (director, writer, etc.). Props include tiny pencils, an artist hat, a bow tie, and a “fix it in post” sticker. 🧠 Step 2: Story Build Together Each group can tackle this differently—some using a traditional storyboard and others working collectively in a shared document to identify the following: - Target Audience: Who needs to be moved, informed, or influenced? - Characters: Who needs to appear in this story—partners, collaborators, funders, communities, people inside and outside the organization? - Key Messages: What do they need to know? - Plot Arc: How will the story unfold? ✏️ Step 3: Bring It to Life The team then puts the plan into action, with everyone playing their assigned role: - Writers drafted talking points for each scene. - Artists sketch icons and visuals to match the script (love the Bikablo icon cards for inspo). - Videographers/voice actors film the storyboard with the camera floating over each frame while the narrator brings the story to life. - Editors clean it up (or embrace the chaos) and upload to a shared drive. Stop treating AI training like a boring lecture and start treating it like a high-stakes competition that delivers real results. Most association leaders are struggling to get staff and volunteers to adopt new technology because they rely on passive learning methods that fail to stick. The secret to building genuine AI fluency is found in the sprint-style workshop where participants must create working demos by a strict deadline. Barry Schieferstein, CAE, CMP, DES of the ASNT (The American Society for Nondestructive Testing) proves that hands-on, coached learning is the fastest way to transfer complex skills to a wary workforce. Research shows that adults perform significantly better and fail less often when they solve problems directly instead of listening to speakers. Project-based learning creates a 15 percent productivity lift by forcing teams to build actual artifacts tied to their daily workflows. You must provide a safe sandbox with governed data so your teams can experiment without the fear of compromising security or privacy. Time pressure is your best friend because it focuses attention and drives rapid problem-solving that long-term projects often lack. The goal is to move from simple interest to working software and then to credible pilots in a matter of days rather than months. Successful workshops require expert facilitators who roam the room to unblock technical hurdles rather than standing at a podium. You should require every team to produce a problem statement and a data access plan to ensure their creations are ready for the real world. Commit to a two-week decision window to fund the strongest prototypes so your team sees that their innovation leads to actual change.
