IPv6 Addressing & Discovery (Cheat Sheet) Router Advertisement (RA): Router sends prefix, mask, MAC + how to get IPv6 (SLAAC / manual / DHCP). Router Solicitation (RS): Host asks router for RA if none received. Neighbor Advertisement (NA): Device announces its IPv6 + MAC to others. Neighbor Solicitation (NS): Device asks “who owns this IPv6?” (like ARP in IPv4). Neighbor Table: Stores IPv6 ↔ MAC mappings (like ARP table), entries expire over time. Flow: 1. Router → RA (prefix + config info). 2. Host → picks IPv6 address. 3. Host → NA (announces self). 4. Devices → use NS/NA to resolve IPv6 ↔ MAC.

What is MP-BGP? The Protocol Behind Modern Networks Most people know BGP as the protocol that powers the Internet. But modern enterprise and service provider networks need much more than just IPv4 routing. That’s where MP-BGP (Multiprotocol BGP) comes in. What is MP-BGP? MP-BGP is an extension of traditional BGP-4 that allows a single BGP session to carry multiple types of routing information. Instead of only IPv4 routes, MP-BGP can transport: ✅ IPv4 Unicast ✅ IPv6 Unicast ✅ MPLS VPNv4 / VPNv6 ✅ EVPN (VXLAN fabrics) ✅ Multicast routes Why Is It Important? Without MP-BGP, BGP would only exchange normal IPv4 routes. With MP-BGP, one protocol can support: -Internet routing -Enterprise WAN -MPLS VPN services -Data Center EVPN fabrics -IPv6 migration How Does It Work? The main differences in OSPFv2 configuration between Cisco and Nokia routers often stem from differing implementations of the protocol, such as Hello/Dead Interval auto-adjustment where Nokia doesn't auto-adjust, and bit option handling, where Nokia historically rejected unknown bits like the EA bit that Cisco's IOS would ignore. Also, while Cisco uses a standard router ospf process-id global command to enable OSPF, Nokia routers use their own syntax, often with a similar underlying process ID structure. Key Differences Hello/Dead Interval Handling: Cisco: When you change the hello-interval in Cisco, the dead-interval is automatically adjusted to be four times the new hello-interval. Nokia: In Nokia routers, the dead-interval is not automatically adjusted when the hello-interval is changed; you must manually set both values. Bit Option Handling (EA Bit Example): Cisco: Cisco routers are designed to ignore unknown bit options, such as the EA bit, as specified in the OSPF RFC. Nokia: Historically, Nokia routers have been documented to reject Hello messages if they contain unknown bit options, like the EA bit, potentially causing incompatibility issues with Cisco routers. Enabling OSPF: Cisco: You enable OSPF in global configuration mode with the command router ospf process-id. Nokia: Nokia routers have their own specific syntax to enable and configure OSPF within their operating system. Syntax and Operational Model: Cisco: Uses Cisco IOS or IOS-XE syntax with commands like ip ospf area to explicitly enable OSPF on an interface. Nokia: Uses Nokia's specific command-line interface (CLI) and configuration model for routing protocols. General Considerations Standard vs. Vendor Implementation: While OSPFv2 is a standard protocol, vendors like Cisco and Nokia implement it with their own specific behaviors and features, leading to minor but sometimes critical differences in configuration and operation. OSPF Process ID: Both vendors require an OSPF process ID to run OSPF, but the ID is locally significant and doesn't need to match between different vendors' routers. Verification: After configuring OSPF, verify the adjacency status and routing tables on both Cisco and Nokia routers to ensure successful communication.
