Big progress in Washington - and good news for project professionals or aspiring ones. PMI has been actively supporting bipartisan legislation that would expand the so-called « 529 Education Savings Account », used by over 11 million American families, to cover not only college tuition, but also professional certifications. That means Americans may soon be able to use these tax-advantaged funds to earn their PMP - or other nationally recognized certifications. A win for professionals. A win for lifelong learning. A win for the project economy. Continuing with the theme of partnership, the penultimate episode of "Impact & Innovation" this season is about Daisy Rosales and Brio, a non-profit that partners with grassroots organizations addressing the mental health of their communities. This January at World Economic Forum week Daisy presented a new framework she co-developed with Catalyst Now, a global movement to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Innovate, Integrate, Sustain are the three phases that Daisy and her co-author Su Balasubramanian observed in successful Public Private Partnerships. We often think the best idea always wins. In reality, the idea backed by innovation capital wins, not necessarily the most brilliant one. Innovation capital is the credibility, trust, relationships, and track record that allow an idea to move forward. It is built over time through delivery, judgment, and the ability to bring others along. When innovation capital is strong, people listen, resources follow, and uncertainty becomes manageable. When it is weak, even good ideas struggle to get airtime. This is why innovation is not just about creativity or intelligence. It is about influence, timing, and confidence earned through consistent action. Leaders who understand this do not push ideas in isolation. They invest in people, networks, and small wins long before they ask for support on something bold. Inheriting the Impossible Project: What New Executive Sponsors Must Do First There is a particular call no executive seeks, yet most serious leaders eventually receive it. You are asked to sponsor a mission-critical, highly visible initiative. Tens of millions have been spent. Results are negligible. Confidence is low. Failure is not an option. You did not design the program or select the vendors. Still, the outcome now carries your name. In these moments, urgency is real. Discipline is essential. Before committing another dollar or entering a board discussion, a new executive sponsor must quickly analyze and mitigate several risks. 1. Establish objective truth. You need a clear, evidence-based view of what has actually been delivered, what is technically viable, and where the true risks sit. Independent validation provides the foundation for credible decisions and protects both the organization and the sponsor. 2. Clarify decision rights and accountability. Large, multi-vendor initiatives fail when ownership is diffused. Progress requires explicit clarity on who makes decisions, who integrates work across parties, and who is accountable for enterprise outcomes. 3. Reframe the financial conversation. The $20M already spent is history. Leadership credibility now hinges on a rigorous assessment of what the remaining $35M can realistically produce, under what assumptions, and on what timeline. 4. Reset scope around business outcomes. Execution accelerates when success is defined in measurable enterprise terms. Narrow the focus to what materially advances the business and align resources accordingly. 5. Prepare the board early. Requests for additional funding succeed when paired with a materially different plan, stronger governance, and a more explicit risk posture. Boards fund clarity, confidence, and control. Taking over a failing engagement requires steadiness, truth, and decisive leadership. That is how confidence is rebuilt and progress becomes real.

This year, we are doing something very intentional: We are 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫 in how we teach, convene, and build leadership capacity and legacy. This is not a departure from our work. It is a natural evolution, one rooted in maturity, clarity, and our commitment to pairing inspiration with intellectual depth, strategy, and substance. In 2026, our work is grounded in 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥��𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, the practical and strategic dimensions of leadership: credibility, communication, influence, and sustainable growth. Our first focus within this pillar is 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, because how you are perceived often shapes the opportunities available to you. Alongside this is 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, where we ask deeper questions: Why do we lead? Whom are we leading? And what responsibility does leadership carry within the community? This is where the soul of leadership lives. Our work this year is guided by our 2026 theme: 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫, a call to move from competition to collective power, and from performative leadership to leadership rooted in care, responsibility, and community.
