The news that The Washington Post is laying off 300 journalists (around a third of its newsroom) is deeply sobering for anyone who cares about our industry. The cuts are more than a difficult moment for one title. It's a signal of structural change across the entire news sector. The Post has long been journalistic royalty: an institution synonymous with global politics and international affairs. Some want Jeff Bezos to reverse the cuts and invest more in "quality journalism”. Others have pointed to the commercial pressures facing even the most prestigious titles. Like every publisher, the Post is scrambling to win digitally. Younger audiences. Video. Audio. Newsletters. Social. Personality-driven and creator-style content. The transition from legacy dominance to digital sustainability is complex. YouTube traffic reportedly plunged when Dave Jorgenson, the face of the Post’s TikTok and YouTube, left last summer. His start-up now attracts more views than his former employer. But this isn’t about one publication. It reflects a broader structural shift affecting the entire news ecosystem. Most journalists are building their careers on the wrong metric. I see this pattern constantly: A journalist obsesses over their article's click count. It gets 50k views, and they celebrate. Views are a vanity metric that's actively destroying journalism. Why? Because views reward sensationalism, not quality. They reward the headline that triggers outrage, not the investigation that actually changes policy. Here's what actually matters: 1. Saves & shares (not just views - shows someone values it enough to return to) 2. Comment depth (not just reactions - shows intellectual engagement) 3. Attribution & citations by other credible outlets (your real peers noticing) 4. Policy/business impact (did it actually change something?) 5. Reader loyalty (do they come back for you specifically?) If you're measuring success by clicks, you're playing a game where sensationalism always wins. If you're measuring by influence, who's listening, who's citing you, who's changing their mind because of your work, you're building something that lasts. What metric do you think journalists should actually be tracking?
