You might be running into some Kali Linux specific issues. I haven't used Kali myself. Given the security focus, I assume it's more restricted in terms of kernel level security, so LXD might not work without additional config.
I just googled "lxd wsl" and there are some promising looking results for getting that working, but I've never tried it. I don't think it's possible to run LXD natively on Windows because it depends on linux kernel specific features.
The simplest way to get this working is to use virtualbox and the Vagrantfile from the exercise files.

Josh Samuelson liked thisJosh Samuelson liked thisI recently interviewed with a smaller, recognizable company—one you’ve likely encountered if you’ve ever googled a technical question. They're not in AI or operating at massive scale, but they’re well-known in certain developer circles. The hiring manager explained that they’re looking to bring in more experienced engineers to build foundational infrastructure, like job queues. Their app holds customer connections open while processing real-time queries—sometimes for several seconds or even minutes—and they’re looking to improve that architecture. I suggested using job queues like RabbitMQ and event-driven callbacks, which seemed to resonate well. I felt confident about the conversation and was invited back for a technical interview. The tech interview opened with the prompt: “Serialize and deserialize this binary tree. Don't use JSON.” After 20 years as a software engineer, building systems and solving real-world problems, I’ve never once needed to implement something like that. Not even close. It was a complete disconnect from the actual work they described needing help with. It was frustrating. The company clearly needs help with basic scalable systems architecture, yet they’re filtering candidates with abstract algorithm puzzles that are irrelevant to their domain. I’ve been preparing with LeetCode for the past two months, and while some questions have potential real-world analogues, this one didn’t. I couldn’t even imagine a situation where it would be useful. I ended the interview early—30 minutes in—because it felt like a waste of time. I wasn’t enjoying it, and more importantly, I wasn’t learning anything about how I’d contribute in the role. Later, I reviewed the solution. It’s not hard. And yes, you could argue I wasn’t prepared. But I’d argue the question had no bearing on the role or the work the team does. It was a generic filter for candidates grinding LeetCode for six months or more. And let’s be honest—this isn’t Google or Meta. The comp doesn’t match those companies, nor does the scale or complexity of their systems. So why copy-paste their interview practices? In my view, this was a lazy interview. It showed no effort to align the question with the real problems the company is facing or the kind of talent they actually need. (Yes, I ran my original post through ChatGPT because my original text was colored by frustration and a little bit of resentment. The above is now more professional while still keeping true to my experience and feelings.) Update: Here is the LeetCode question - https://lnkd.in/gvgRAfPF The interviewers copy/pasted the skeleton code with almost no changes. I cannot overstate how lazy this was.
