"Earn the pause." I love that line, and it made me stop and read the entire article uninterrupted. Jodie Stocker Kennedy at Spotter said it in the context of Creator TV — the shift from short-form posts to long-form episodic programming that people actually make time for. Think about the last time you sat down and watched something without reaching for your phone. And it reinforces something we’ve believed for a long time at Intuition Media Group: Whether it’s 6 seconds or 30 minutes—the format was never the point. The pause is the point. The brands winning in the creator economy aren’t the ones with the most posts or the biggest reach. They’re the ones that have earned enough trust that someone actually stops what they’re doing to pay attention. I love seeing heritage brands like All-Clad break into the Olympic conversation for the first time. It’s a great example of how the "gated community" of sports marketing is finally being torn down. For years, the Winter Games were reserved for the biggest spenders with multi-million dollar linear packages. But thanks to the expansion of programmatic access on platforms like Peacock, we’re seeing a real democratization of the screen. You no longer need a Super Bowl budget to reach an audience cheering for Team USA. This is a huge win for brands that have traditionally lived in search or social. A few reasons why this shift matters: 👉Contextual Relevance over Broad Reach: A brand like Arc’teryx can now show up exactly when the audience is thinking about mountain culture. That’s a moment of shared values. 👉Precision and Agility: Programmatic allows marketers to be performance-driven even in a high-profile live environment. You can test, learn, and optimize in a space that used to be "set it and forget it." 👉Lowering the Barrier, Not the Quality: Even with a smaller buy, you’re building brand recall in an emotional, high-attention environment. While others might be chasing what's hot, the best thing you can do is study what's consistent! I’m less interested in trends this year. Not because trends are useless, but because they should be the output, not the input. Real, valuable signals live in audience behavior, which moves much slower than trends. Winning teams are the ones who understood why their audience craved authenticity before AI came like a thief in the night. Across launches, the behaviors that matter most are usually consistent: when people lean in, when they hesitate, when they share, when they drop. Too often teams mistake novelty for insight and chase what looks new instead of what keeps repeating. Behavior shows up before it becomes a trend. You can see it in comment patterns, watch time drop offs, rewatches, saves, the questions people keep asking. Those signals show you what the audience is trying to get, not what the platform is pushing that week. Patience is going to be key here. When you slow down enough to study behavior, you are able to make fewer reactive decisions and more intentional ones. Sure, novelty may win headlines but behavior gets results, don’t confuse the two. Real insight is knowing whether your audience prioritizes convenience over features, or community over content. That knowledge doesn't expire, but that viral format you stumbled on last week? That’s so 2025! Behavior shows up in small ways first. Support tickets. Which emails get opened. What people ask for when they think no one important is listening. This year, I'm building strategy around what doesn't change. The business of professional sports continues to evolve. Just three years ago, the Denver Broncos sold for what was then an astounding $4.65B. Look at their value now: $6.55B, a nearly $2B increase in enterprise value in just three years. And the game of ownership of sports franchises is no longer just about the team on the field, but the ecosystem of related parts of the business. The stadium facilities are no longer just a playing field and stands - they are evolving into entertainment complexes that create value during the months when the franchises are not on the field. There is no better example of this evolution than right here in Miami, where Hard Rock Stadium serves as a tennis facility for the Miami Open, and a race complex for the F1 Grand Prix of Miami, or the future Inter Miami CF Stadium, which will become a multi-use entertainment complex adjacent to the stadium's grounds. There were some eye-opening ideas and insights from a star-packed panel of sports content leaders talking YouTube strategy at the recent Sports Business Journal Media Innovators Conference. Some key points that stuck w/ me: 📺 ESPN’s Omar Raja talked about their three pillars of YouTube: Shorts, Longform, and he also called out Community. My note: Some of their Posts get thousands of engagements & hundreds of comments, it’s growing 📺 The Brooklyn Nets have benefited by going much longer. Their player profile series has tripled in audience vs. the last two seasons combined (!) as they’ve gone from 45 minutes to 90m The Nets have also invested in vertical video & their Shorts views have increased 800% YoY! 📺 Dude Perfect has tweaked their strategy, with Shorts more frequent & long-form less (went from a longform release every 2 weeks to now every 3 weeks), and long-form now means 25m+ 📺 DP’s CEO Andrew Yaffe detailed the difference between YT Shorts & TikToks: TTs are shorter, more casual and meme-focused, whereas Shorts should have higher production and storytelling (they aim for 60s). Shorts also drives subscriber growth, a clip from a longform video drove 250k new subs! 📺 Raja also noted ESPN’s longer Shorts have done well (45s) and go into a bit more depth than a TT on the same content would (~ 15s) 📺 NASCAR’s Bill Voth noted they lean into what happens with drivers on non-race days, showcasing their personalities. Their north star is attracting new fans (if new fans like the content, existing fans will, too). “We make things for the internet” 📺 The Nets’ Andrew Karson said access is their differentiator (i.e. highlights are a commodity) and noted clips from their longform do well on YT as opposed to trend-driven videos, which are better for TT. The longform they produce is activated, too — premiere events, showing on RSN 📺 Yaffe noted a domestic subscriber is worth more than an int'l sub ($$-wise) for DP, and YT is an ecosystem entry point — to get fans to live shows, buy merch, O&O, etc. 📺 DP shifted from one-off deals to sponsor partnerships and more extensive integrations (think of themselves as a sports team or league); a better model for the property (more sustainable) and partner (different assets, optimization) 📺 The Nets have sponsors of docs, but generally it’s not a ‘produce if sold’; content is tied to bigger goals of audience development and basketball ops 📺 DP envisions using their primary channel as a hub that can feed secondary channels So so much more in the full panel and on SBJ (linked below!). The major themes revolve around the Shorts opportunity (and its differentiation from TT) and how YT is increasingly a TV experience (as opposed to mostly mobile) — people are consuming YT content the same way they do Netflix, and that’s a helluva opportunity for sports organizations to capture more time and more mindshare. YouTube is not a video dumping ground; it’s a strategic platform full of possibilities.
