My fascination has nothing to do with the article's headline, but rather a statistic buried half way into the article... >>>Currently, the APS system has a capacity to generate over 9,000 megawatts, with a peak energy demand record of 8,631 MW last summer. Requests for new connections, however, have exceeded 19,000 MW. That is almost mind boggling when you consider what that means for the future construction of energy generation and transmition in the state. The state's largest utility (which by the way operates the country's largest nuclear plant) already has connection requests for power needs that will require it to more than double it's capacity. How will the industry be able to meet that need? Of course that comes as no surprise to many (most?) people in the industry who have watched demand soar over the last several years. The Associated Builders and Contractors recently adjusted its outlook to show a demand in 2026 of 349,000 new workers needed, while Deloitte's 2026 Engineering and Construction Industry Outlook places the number at 499,000, and LinkedIn's own Jobs on the Rise 2026 report (see at https://lnkd.in/gxUU5cyn ) places construction leaders on its list of predictions of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. this year. Does it matter if the number is 349,000 versus 499,000? I don't think so, either way, it's a big number and its highly dependent on some hard to predict variables. But when you take all the reports and predictions together, the trend is clear. We need more people in the industry. There is also one fact that should not be overlooked when evaluating industry demand: >>Much of the demand is being created by the increasing numbers of construction personnel that are retiring in the next five years, with the Deloitte report stating that 41% of the workforce is expected to retire by 2031 while only 10% of the current workers are under the age of 25. There are three reasons this is important to understand: 1. This is a critical imbalance in an industry that has been traditionally overlooked by many potential job seekers. 2. The retiring demographic holds the bulk of the knowledge of "how to build" - it's not just the trade skills we can teach; it's the foundational knowledge that we need to transfer before it leaves. 3. The problem cannot be addressed overnight - it will take time to attract and properly train the future construction workforce. This is go-time for the construction industry! Everyone in the industry needs to be working on improving our image, creating opportunities for knowledge transfer, and doing their part to support training and mentorship. As we continue to face labor and management shortages, the real opportunity isn’t adopting technology for its own sake, it’s adopting technology that drives meaningful outcomes. For years I’ve said: focus on the outcome, not the solution. Today, AI is finally living up to that standard. Here’s what AI is already making possible: 🔹 Doing more with less - With a shrinking workforce, AI helps teams increase output without increasing effort 🔹 Reducing burnout - Offloading repetitive work gives our people more bandwidth for high‑value tasks 🔹 Cutting rework - An AI “second set of eyes” can catch design issues in the office before they become costly field issues 🔹 Supporting the trades - As skilled labor becomes harder to find, GCs need better tools to coach and collaborate with the trades One real world example that I have had the opportunity to test is the upcoming Bluebeam Max. Jim Rogers shared thisIt seems we are starting the New Year with an acknowledgment of something many of us in the #construction industry have been focused on for several years... we need more people in the industry! More skilled trades and more construction managers. None of the data centers can run AI computations until they get built. None of the chip manufacturing plants can produce chips for those new AI computers until they get built. And everything to be constructed needs increased infrastructure for both power and data transmission. We have been screaming about this for years. I have given numerous presentations on the future demand given the retirements we know are coming. I even have a course on LinkedIn Learning that discusses the role everyone in the construction industry should be playing to ensure we meet future demands. https://lnkd.in/gcmGcbwi The time has come. Jim Rogers shared this“I hate using ‘white-collar’ and ‘blue-collar,’” he says. “What will those terms even mean in five years?” Good question! And a good continuation of recent discussions in moy previous posts and newsletter. LinkedIn recently included positions in #construction managment in its top 25 in demand list for 2026, and this article from The Wall Street Journal hits on an important point. There are people who hold positions in industries such as tech, software, and finance with titles like "project manager" that often already have the skills that we struggle to teach to construction managers. Dealing with people, communications, organization, scheduling, managing conflict...these are all skills that transfer to construction management. It's actually often easier for someone with these skills to learn the technical side of construction than it is to teach a construction trades person the business management side of things. I know many people that have made a mid-career change and found it rewarding. Here is one path: Go jump on LinkedIn Learning (free if you are already paying for Premium) and check out the Construction Management Professional Certificate at https://lnkd.in/d4_Qe2mb It's filled with many courses and topics you need to learn. Since the publication of Leading Yourself, I've thought a lot about what would make this era of my work more meaningful. After launching a book, the default path is to go wider- chase bigger stages, buddy up with A-listers, and watch your follower count like the stock market. But I do my best work with real teams, not anonymous audiences. So I'm choosing to go deeper instead. And to do that, I knew I needed the right partner. What stood out in my conversations with the Emory Continuing Education team was a shared focus on what happens after the "idea," and a commitment to not just provide information, but help people actually use it. I'm grateful for the chance to do more of that work here in Atlanta, where I'll be helping leaders influence without authority, build self-sufficient teams, and, of course, lead themselves well 🧡 I'll also be keynoting ECE's Chief Learning Officer breakfast on May 1. This project encompasses five of the pumping stations along the route taken by the incredible CAP system, which diverts water from the Colorado River all the way into Central Arizona to bring Phoenix and Tucson the water needed to thrive. Caliente Construction was chosen as the General Contractor for the project and my role is serve them and CAP as the safety manager during construction operations at each of the plants. These CAP sites are part of the OSHA VPP program and the construction…
