This is part of a ten-year study in the Los Angeles area. This was the first set of data to create a baseline understanding of public use of community science education resources including the California Museum of Science and Industry (California Science Center). Methods used This was a quantiative study of 1,007 people that utlitized open-ended and close-ended questions through telephone-based surveys. Thirty phone interviewers conducted the surveys in a period of 5-weeks. Concepts used Falk reported this research project is a series of nested investigation where each successive research investigation would look at smaller and smaller components of museum research. The research team developed two approaches to investigate the museum's influence-outside-in and inside-out. Outside-in uses looks outside the musuem into the general community through random sampling to assess the effect the museum is having through telephone surveys and in-person interviews. The inside-out methods, they said, looks at specific exhibits and programs with in the musuem through longitudinal case studies to assess the long-term effects of museum programming on attendees. Claims made People who had been to the California Museum of Science and Industry was approximately 44% of the surveyed population. These museum-goers were more affluent, been longer residents of Los Angelos, were more likely to be While than Latino, reported a higher interest in and knoweldge of science and were more likely to have taken advantage of other free-choice science activities as adults and children. Affluence and education were not strong predictors of museum attendance - instead interest, prior experience and awareness of science learning opportunities and a predisposition to reading were the most significant variables correlating to musuem-going. More than 90% of the self-identified museum-goers said that museum experience had increased their knowledge of science and technology topics.
