The U.S. Department of Labor just released its AI Literacy Framework and TEGL 03-25 guidance — and it aligns closely with the work so many of us in higher education have already been building. At San Diego Community College District, our SDCCD Institutional Innovation and Effectiveness team has spent the past two+ years developing a tiered AI professional development model spanning literacy, competency, and fluency — supporting conversations, workshops, and professional development access across all four of our colleges to help faculty and staff navigate this rapidly evolving landscape. When the DOL framework lays out five foundational content areas—understanding AI principles, exploring uses, directing AI effectively, evaluating outputs, and using AI responsibly—it mirrors the direction we're actively working toward. That alignment is important. Frameworks like this are strongest when they're informed by educators, workforce practitioners, and institutional leaders who do the work on the ground every day. From our InnovAItion Day to our American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Institute participation, our @ASU+GSV recognition, and our $1.5M Equitable AI Alliance with San Diego State University and UC San Diego — this work has been led by experts in higher education who understand what students and communities actually need. What excites me most is the opportunity to accelerate, together. This guidance opens WIOA funding pathways for AI literacy and encourages deeper collaboration between workforce boards and community colleges, while we continue centering equity as a core delivery principle. We're still on this journey. The challenges around this change are real and the critical, thoughtful considerations are paramount. But I'm energized by the possibilities ahead and grateful to be doing this work alongside an incredible team at SDCCD and amazing colleagues across the district, region, state, and nation. AI literacy belongs to everyone, and the best way to get there, to competency, and to fluency is together! In response to significant federal funding cuts, the Ventura County Adult Education Consortium launched CAER (California Adult Education Resources)—a statewide platform designed to connect adult schools with local nonprofits. Leveraging ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer API, CAER offers secure, streamlined access to detailed data on active 501(c)(3) organizations, including funding insights, making strategic partnerships easier than ever. Early success includes collaboration with Assistance League to provide vision care for adult learners. Alumnus Ruben Canedo's focus and passion is educational justice for students with basic needs insecurity. As UC Berkeley's director of strategic equity initiatives, he is striving to make sure college students have the food, housing and other essentials they need to succeed in school and life. Recent data from the California Student Aid Commission show that 66% of postsecondary students in California are food insecure, and 53% lack secure housing. While still an undergraduate at Berkeley, Canedo helped conceptualize the campus’s Undocumented Student Program, which opened in 2012. In 2014, he launched Berkeley’s food pantry, then spearheaded the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Center. Launched in 2019, the center served more than 7,000 unique students and had nearly 27,000 total contacts in 2023-24. “Ruben’s vision of a just world, where students have everything they need to grasp education and life opportunities, inspires me,” said Fabrizio Mejia, Berkeley’s interim vice chancellor for the Division of Equity & Inclusion, UC Berkeley. “He’s been at the ground floor of helping launch many of the programs Berkeley is known for nationally.” Canedo also co-led the creation of the UC system’s Basic Needs Initiative. Today, each of the 10 UC campuses has a basic needs center, made possible by recurring state funding, that includes a food pantry, emergency housing assistance and application support for CalFresh, the government’s food assistance program. How do you cultivate a culture of care? As the world presents new challenges, we know that relying on one another is as important as ever. Our team has been using the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley's 14 Practices to Create Belonging through Care to chart the path forward: 1. Recognize that we all need care at some point, in some way 2. Develop a deep understanding of self in order to be in better relationship with others 3. Share what you need, in order to be cared for well 4. Protect your (and other people’s) time to rest 5. Practice vulnerability in ways that are reciprocal 6. Cultivate intimacy 7. Make connections between the micro and the macro 8. Tend to your archives 9. Honor and recognize the leadership and knowledge of the people indigenous to wherever you are 10. Trust survivors 11. Listen to young people 12. Nurture imagination 13. Hold space for grieving; grieve in the ways that you need 14. Celebrate Seasoned yoga teachers, how do you incorporate these practices into your classes, and into your life? New and aspiring teachers, what practice speaks most to you? ✨ PLLN Cohort V | Session 4 Highlights ✨ This week, educators, school leaders, and students from across California came together for three days of deep learning, reflection, and recalibration as part of the Peer Leading & Learning Network (PLLN) hosted by California Collaborative for Educational Excellence Community Engagement Initiative. Across January 27–29, Cohort V teams: 🔹 Explored six research-based strategies for effective school–community engagement 🔹 Used real implementation data to decide whether to refine their change ideas 🔹 Built actionable sustainability plans focused on long-term impact and scale At the same time, student leaders stepped into their own learning space identifying themes, analyzing survey data, and shaping the next phase of their CEI Journey. The youth voice was uplifted and helped drive the conversation on school climate. Sharing this thoughtful piece. It reminds us that higher education cannot afford to face external threats while fractured internally by the faculty–administration divide. When I served as chair of a faculty committee in the Senate, I saw firsthand the power of dialogue and the importance of addressing faculty issues from a common-interest perspective rather than entrenched positions. Building trust, practicing transparency, and honoring shared governance are what sustain our institutions through challenge and change. This article is a timely reminder that all parties must extend olive branches, listen, and lead together if we are to navigate the turbulence ahead. #highered
